VIOLENCE INTERRUPTER

Mission: St. Louis is hiring 12 Violence Interrupters for a new program that specifically works with individuals at highest risk for engaging in violence - to prevent violence from occurring, to intervene when it is happening or is about to, and to respond when tragic events do take place. A team of 3 Violence Interrupters will work at each site. There will be 4 sites, with 3 launching this fall/winter and the fourth in the winter/spring.

  • As Violence Interrupter, you will be responsible for:

    • Neighborhood Outreach

    • Build relationships with key individuals in the target area, learning about the causes of shootings/killings to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation.

    • Form relationships with the highest risk people in the community, as well as the people who know them, and engage with them on a regular basis, assessing readiness for case management.

    • Hold events that will engage individuals most at risk.

    • Case Management

    • Maintain a caseload of people who are at highest risk for violent activity.

    • Maintain frequent communication with participants on your caseload and assist them as they navigate each day.

    • Formulate Action Plans (risk reduction plans) to prevent and resolve conflicts.

    • Refer individuals interested in Workforce Development through the established process.

    • Incident Intervention

    • Talk to residents in the target area about potential conflicts and assist in preventing them.

    • When possible, intervene in circumstances in which gun violence is likely, including possible retaliation.

    • Work with community partners to identify and diffuse “hot spots” for gun violence.

    • Organize peace-promoting, healing responses when shootings/killings take place.

    This is a full-time position with benefits that reports directly to the Site Supervisor. This is an at-will position and can be terminated by either party at any time.

    This program exists within the larger organization, Mission: St. Louis. This position will participate in various organization-wide activities and events, including monthly all-office meetings.

OUTREACH SPECIALIST

Are you highly relational? Do you find yourself naturally connecting with people? Are you good at finding resources and programs and then connecting people to them? If so, this position may be for you!

Mission: St. Louis is starting a violence intervention program that specifically works with individuals at highest risk for engaging in violence. There will be four sites plus the main office on North Grand. Outreach Specialists will know the programming available at the main office, particularly through the various parts of the EACH1 program (Employment and Community Health as One1), and engagement activities such as Open Gym, the Music Studio, and Manhood gatherings. The Outreach Specialist will be the liaison between people in each of the 4 violence interruption sites and the offerings available from the rest of the organization. 

    • Working in different environments, both office-based and on the ground, during times that work best for the community (including some evenings and weekends).

    • Working collaboratively with staff and partners in linking clients with needed services.

    • Collaborating with Community Violence Intervention (CVI) partner organizations to provide complementary, coordinated violence prevention, intervention, and recovery services.

    • Providing resources and referrals to prevent violent incidents or to assist with grief and recovery efforts after incidents.

    • Understanding the Resource Hub, Career Coaching and Success Coaching components of EACH1, providing those services when possible and referring individuals to EACH1 as appropriate.

    • Coordinating and executing various engagement activities at the main office.

    • Working with Resource Coaches to connect with local organizations, churches, educational institutions and social services to know what resources and services are available in the community.

    • Representing M:STL at outreach events with the goal of recruiting program participants and raising awareness of M:STL; holding events as appropriate.

    • Researching and identifying service and activity gaps in North City through meeting with community members about their needs and opinions.
